What Andy’s students have to say about their lesson experience:

“Four great reasons to take a lesson with Andy.  1.  He prepares for the lessons, thinking about what you are aiming to learn and comes armed with ideas and exercises to address your specific goals.  2.  He strikes a great balance between looking at technique and looking at musical ideas.   3.  He has a very melodic ear and plays delicious lines, using methods that he can explain and share with you.  4.  He scaffolds really well - pitching the lesson at the level where you can grasp the content but you are taking in lots of new information.  That’s what great educators do.

I left with things I can use straight away, things I can practice and things that are a challenge.  What more could you ask for?”

— Jonnie

” He has the rare ability to push you just hard enough to ensure that you progress without become discouraged, while always being positive and encouraging, even when answering questions (including those emailed between lessons), with seemingly endless patience. His approach is holistic, personal and tailored to your needs and abilities, with well prepared and structured lessons and material leading to a much deeper understanding than many teachers achieve. ”

“ I had become stuck in a rut and decided to get some lessons to help me progress. What was immediately apparent to me was Andy’s enjoyment of teaching. I found the lessons to be challenging but Andy’s patient approach paid off and I found my playing improving beyond recognition.  My playing is is way more advanced than it was and I feel very confident in a band environment these days. Highly recommend. If you put the work in you’ll get a lot out. ”

FAQs

What platform do you use for lessons?

For online lessons I use Zoom but can also use Skype or FaceTime if that is preferred.

What resources do use?

At the end of a lesson, when relevant you will receive an email with any PDFs, audio files or video demonstrations as necessary. All lesson materials are created either using Sibelius or Neck Diagrams. Audio is recorded using Logic Pro X.

How do I receive feedback on my progress?

I encourage students to send either audio recordings or videos of themselves working on their lesson targets in order to receive feedback. This isn’t mandatory, but many of my students find this insightful.

How would you describe your teaching style?

My teaching style is incredibly personal and centred around the individual’s learning style. One of the most important aspects of teaching for me is ensuring my students have clear goals and understand exactly how and why they should be practicing something. I don’t believe in having one way of doing things, every student has a different starting point and I adapt my methods to suit how you learn. I am extremely patient and take my student’s learning very seriously. It’s important you make progress, see improvements, whilst having fun at the same time!

What payment method do you take for lessons?

Lessons are to be paid for via PayPal before the session.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours notice are charged in full.

What qualifications do you hold?

I hold a Level 4 Diploma in Music Teaching (Distinction) and Grade 8 Guitar (Distinction). My most important qualification is my experience, both from my own learning journey and as a performing jazz musician. I have studied jazz guitar very seriously for 20 years and as a result have come to learn what aspects are most important for effective practice and efficient progress.
